
The country’s Foreign Relations Department confirmed El Chapo has been flown to New York today, just hours before Donald Trump’s inauguration.
The notorious drug lord made headlines in January last year when he was recaptured following six months on the run from officials after he broke out of Mexico’s maximum-security Altiplano jail.

Two US senior officials have confirmed El Chapo is en-route after the US Drug Enforcement Administration took custody of Guzman when he crossed the border from El Paso, Texas.
He then boarded a plane to New York – one of a number of jurisdictions where Guzman faces charges.
The notorious drug lord made headlines in January last year when he was recaptured following six months on the run from officials after he broke out of Mexico’s maximum-security Altiplano jail.
El Chapo was most recently held in a prison close to the city of Ciudad Juarez, which borders the El Paso in the US.
He had previously managed to escape another jail in 2001, before being arrested in 2014.

El Chapo is unlikely to receive much sympathy from the President-elect after the drug kingpin tweeted his dismay at Trump’s election victory.
He wrote: “The candidate of the most palpable hate, confrontation, racism, persecution and misogyny has won. How sad for us all.”
He even threatened Trump while he was on the run last year, saying: “If you keep p****** me off I'm going to make you eat your words you f****** blonde milk-s***”.
