Olazabal, the last Spanish winner, pulled himself back from the brink on the back nine to win his first Major at the first extra hole in a play-off with Justin Rose.
It followed a final round 69 which took him into a shoot-out with Rose with the pair locked at nine under.
“Jose sent me a text on Wednesday saying how much he believed in me and what I needed to do. He told me to believe in myself, to be calm and not let things get to me like I have in the past,” said Garcia.
“I felt the most confident I’ve ever felt on a Major Sunday. Even after making a couple of bogeys I still believed. I hit some really good shots coming in.

The two European Ryder Cup teammates, who first played amateur golf together as 14-year-olds, were praised afterwards for their sportsmanship during their duel.
“We are good friends so we are very respectful of each other so we were cheering each other on. We wanted to beat the other guy not for the other guy to lose it,” he said.
