Manchester United star Ander Herrera has been linked with a move to Barcelona
Reports from the Catalan capital have suggested the Spain midfielder is wanted by new boss Ernesto Valverde, who was his manager at Athletic Bilbao in 2013-14, the season before his £28m move to Old Trafford.
Valverde, who is taking over from Luis Enrique, is understood to have identified Herrera as the man he wants to re-ignite Barca’s midfield engine room behind stellar front three Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar.
Herrera has cited Valverde as one of the biggest influences on his career but has no desire to return to Spain at this stage and is understood to be happy at Old Trafford where he has just been voted United’s player of the season and has become a key figure under Jose Mourinho.
Only Paul Pogba has made more appearances than Herrera this season – he featured in 50 out of 64 games in all competitions – and he underlined his development by being voted man of the match in last week’s Europa League final win over Ajax which clinched a return to the Champions League next season.
Herrera has a season left – with an extra year’s option – on the four-year deal he signed following his switch from Bilbao.
But Manchester United are likely to offer him an improved contract in the coming months.
The Spaniard has made a total of 84 appearances in the Premier League with the Red Devils, since joining three years ago.
He has scored 10 goals and created 12 assists.
