After a slow start to the match, Marouane Fellaini headed Manchester United into the lead in the 44th minute from a Bastian Schweinsteiger cross.

And they were made to rue that miss when Anthony Martial's cross was powerfully met by Chris Smalling who bullied Stephen Warnock at the back post.

Martial was once again the provider for United's third in the 74th minute after a flowing counter-attack, his perfect low cross was tap home from close range by Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

But the biggest cheer of the match was reserved for Schweinsteiger, who marked his first start of the season with a neat volley from inside the six yard box.

In the closing stages United boss Jose Mourinho gave debuts to youngsters Axel Tuanzebe and Joel Pereira.
