The Armenia international secured his £26.3million switch from Borussia Dortmund last summer.

Despite a slow start to life at Old Trafford, Henrikh Mkhitaryan has settled and shown his influence in Jose Mourinho’s team.

The 28-year-old was linked with potential moves to Chelsea and Arsenal while he looked for a transfer away from the Bundesliga club last season.

But Mourinho won the race to sign him, alongside Paul Pogba, Eric Bailly and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Even though Mkhitaryan revealed Manchester United were not necessarily the ultimate goal, he is happy with his decision and the challenge undertaken in English football.

"United might not have been my dream club,” Mkhitaryan told Bild.

“But they have always been among the best clubs in the world for me.

"Manchester United are a bigger club than Borussia Dortmund, everyone knows that and we should just accept that.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan has suggested he may have had other ambitions when he looked to leave Dortmund

“It was a new challenge for me that I could not turn down."

Mkhitaryan’s latest contribution came on Sunday as he burst through the Leicester defence to score for United in their 3-0 win.

And with Champions League qualification being pursued, the playmaker is expected to start again at home to Watford on Saturday (3pm).
