The Sporting Lisbon midfielder, who helped Portugal win Euro 2016, has long been monitored by the Premier League elite.

He was expected to make the move in the summer of 2015 after an impressive European Under-21 Championship, but suffered a big injury just after it.

But his time could come this summer with Manchester City ready to snap up the 24-year-old anchor man.

Spanish newspaper AS claim Pep Guardiola wants to bring him to Manchester as he looks to revamp his midfield.

Guardiola has had a mixed start to life in England but Sunday’s win took them back into the top four and up to third spot.

They remain 10 points off league leaders Chelsea but have been given a lift by the arrival of Gabriel Jesus.

Jose Mourinho vs Pep Guardiola: Which Manchester boss has the highest trophy haul?

The Brazil striker has three goals in his last two games, including the injury time winner against Swansea.

But there are issues in midfield for Guardiola with Yaya Toure out of contract in the summer and showing signs of age.

Fernandinho has been a regular although has struggled with discipline this term.

Carvalho would add some muscle for City and has recently switched representation to Media Base Sports agency, which is owned by Guardiola’s brother.
