The police were called ay 9am after reports of a man “acting suspiciously” outside the school.
Greater Manchester Police said: “Armed response officers attended due to reports that the man had a firearm.”
The 30-year-old man was arrested near Yew Tree Lane Community Primary School in Dukinfield, Tameside at around 9am today.
Farntic parents rushed to the school after they received this email:
"Just to inform you there has been an incident on site today involving the police. The school followed the correct procedures and went in to lock down. All children and staff are safe. Please do not worry."

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: “We were called to reports of a man acting suspiciously on Yew Tree Lane.”
The spokesman added police remain at the scene and no weapon has yet been found.
Parents have been pictured gathering at the school gates to make sure their children are safe.

The incident happened in Yew Tree Lane Primary School
The council has reported that all 500 pupils are safe inside the school.
One parent said: “I am relived they are safe. But I am concerned about how they are going to stop this from happening again.”
Police continue to patrol the area and the local parade of shops, along with their sniffer dogs.
The man was detained under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act.
