Kevin Pietersen has played for Surrey before and has a good relationship with the club
Pietersen has not played competitve cricket in England since 2015 when he had a stint in the County Championship with Surrey.
The South African-born batsman is now a T20 specialist and has played for franchises all over the world in the last two years.
But he has avoided the T20 Blast in England due to its format, which has previously seen the competition spread over most of the season.
"I have found it quite difficult because playing once a week is hard work," Pietersen said last year.
"I find tournaments like the CPL, the Big Bash and IPL – which play a lot – much easier because there is much more time in the environment.
"You spend 24/7 with the players.
"In England, playing once a week, it’s much harder because playing once a week means you are training once a week."
However, this year's competition will run in a block from early July through to the finals day on September 2.
