Serena Williams proved too strong for Johanna Kontaq
Konta, who reached the semi-finals in Melbourne last year, lost in straight sets in the last eight in the early hours of this morning to Williams – 6-2, 6-3.
Williams, a six-time champion at the Australian Open, was in dominant mood from the off.
Her movement and massive forehands at times caught Konta completely off guard.

Serena Williams through to her 34th Grand Slam semi-final after beating Johanna Konta
Although Konta tried to hold on, Williams didn’t give her any time to settle.
After setting up three match points, Williams wrapped up the match when her forehand was dumped tamely into the net by Konta.
Williams was magnanimous in victory, and reckons Konta will be an Australian Open champion in the future.
“Johanna [Konta] has been playing so well, I was in the locker room watching her clean up her matches, she is a future champion here for sure, so I am pleased to get through this.
"I got a little frustrated with my serve, but I told myself 'don't get Babyrena' and focused on enjoying myself out here.
“Today I felt I can do this, it is such a great opportunity for me.”
