In a tetchy and often-bad tempered interview, the Islington North MP was accused of handing the Tories a “blank cheque” over Brexit after voting for the bill to trigger Article 50.

Earlier this week unverified reports began to circulate that Mr Corbyn had settled on a date for his resignation with his inner circle.

Speaking to Charlie Stayt on BBC Breakfast, Mr Corbyn was asked: “There is a story going about that you have set a date for when you are going to quit as Labour leader?”

Mr Corbyn replied: “That is in the ‘I made it up yesterday.com’”

The 67-year-old said the report was “absolute nonsense”.

Jeremy Corbyn accused the BBC of promoting fake news

“So your future as Labour leader is absolutely intact, you have not considered for a moment whether you as leader are damaging the party,” Stayt asked again.

A clearly vexed Mr Corbyn said: “I am really surprised the BBC is reporting fake news.

“I was elected leader of this party and I am very proud to lead this party.”

He said he would continue to demand social justice in Britain and opposing the Government over social care and the NHS.

Mr Corbyn has been accused by the Tories of leading a "hopelessly divided" Labour Party after a senior frontbencher quit the shadow cabinet to defy the leader's orders and vote against the Brexit Bill.

Clive Lewis was forced to quit the Labour leader's top team on Wednesday night to vote against the European Union (Notification of Withdrawal) Bill, which will allow Theresa May to begin exit talks under Article 50 of the EU treaties.

The former shadow business secretary defied a three-line whip after promising last week he would vote against the legislation at third reading if Labour amendments to safeguard against a "hard Brexit" were not passed.

But Mr Corbyn appeared to leave the door open for his ally's return to the shadow cabinet at some point, remarking: "I wish Clive well and look forward to working with him in the future."

Asked if the comment meant Mr Lewis could serve again in Mr Corbyn's top team, a Labour source said the they "wouldn't rule anything out".

Mr Lewis, touted by some as a potential future Labour leader, said he could not back the Bill, given his Norwich constituency voted 56.2% to 43.8% to remain in the EU in June's referendum.

He said: "When I became the MP for Norwich South, I promised my constituents I would be 'Norwich's voice in Westminster, not Westminster's voice in Norwich'.

"I therefore cannot, in all good conscience, vote for something I believe will ultimately harm the city I have the honour to represent, love and call home.

"It is therefore with a heavy heart that I have decided to resign from the shadow cabinet.”
