Could the Labour leader be set to step down?

In a number of tweets early on Wednesday morning, Manchester Evening News reporter Jennifer Williams claimed Corbyn is not expected to leave immediately but has made plans to resign as the Leader of the Opposition.

She wrote: “Am told corbyn has given a departure date to his close circle. Hence the frenzy.

“Single sourced, I would add. Just to be total disclosure.”

She quickly added: “Third source agrees there's definite manoeuvring. Expectation that corbyn is going. Not necesarily straight away, but going.”

Express.co.uk has contacted the Labour Party regarding these claims.

The unconfirmed reports comes ahead of a key vote which will determine whether Theresa May is given the power to trigger the start of Brexit negotiations.

Labour MPs are expected to continue their revolt against the struggling party leader after he imposed a three-line whip on the vote at the third reading – which could result in more frontbench resignations.

Shadow environment secretary Rachael Maskell, shadow equalities minister Dawn Butler and shadow Welsh secretary Jo Stevens have already resigned in opposition to the bill.

At the second reading of the Brexit bill, 47 Labour MPs defied Corbyn to oppose and similar numbers are expected to ignore the three-line whip at the vote on Wednesday evening.
