Wilfried Zaha then squared the ball across the startled Arsenal defence for Townsend to convert.
And Carragher said on Sky Sports that Gabriel looked “absolutely terrified” of challenging Benteke.
"That sums up Arsenal's defenders today, and perhaps for the past ten years," Carragher said.

Arsenal had conceded 36 Premier League goals before tonight’s class at Selhurst Lane – the second-worst record of the top six clubs after Liverpool (40).
They went into the game with the Eagles on a three-game losing streak away from home in the league, although they did keep a clean sheet in the 3-0 win over West Ham last Wednesday night.
But Palace further frustrated the visitors in the second half after first Yohan Cabaye and then Luka Milivojevic found the net.
And at the end of the game Carragher said: "Palace thoroughly deserved it. It could have been more. An embarrassment for Arsenal but it was a typical Allardyce performance."
