Arsenal played three centre-backs for the first time in years as they sought a valuable win at the Riverside.
Wenger welcomed back Laurent Koscielny and played the France international alongside Gabriel and Rob Holding.
The move was in effort to stop Arsenal’s poor run of form that has seen them lose their last four Premier League away games.

And Carragher has questioned whether or not the system switch will work.
“He’s changed formation. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Arsene Wenger change the system,” Carragher said on Sky Sports.
“He’s always had great belief in what he does.
“Will there be a reaction tonight? You never know with Arsenal.
“I was expecting the reaction last week on the back of West Brom and losing three or four (away games) on the bounce. But you never got it.
“It’s not about winning the game, getting top four – that’s the most important thing for Wenger and fans – but actually (they have to) put in a performance.

“Losing a game at Crystal Palace (last Monday) is a tough place to go. It’s difficult. But it’s the performance, not always the result.
“As (Wenger) just said you’re playing for Arsenal Football Club and you expect energy – and that’s not what we saw last Monday.”
