Lord Falconer insisted the Prime Minister chose to hold the June 8 vote as a result of favourable opinion polls over the last couple of weeks.
The latest YouGive poll reveals the Conservatives would win 44 per cent of the vote – almost double Labour’s 23 per cent, which suggests it could be the biggest Tory victory in history.
Lord Falconer said Theresa May's reasons for holding a General Election were "disingenuous rubbish"
It’s disingenuous rubbish on her part
He said: “It’s disingenuous rubbish on her part. She said when she became Prime Minister in June 2016 that what the country needed was stability.
“She comes out on to the steps of Downing Street this morning and says everything has changed, she says people are opposing Brexit now.
“That is rubbish. She knew the SNP and the Lib Dems were against it in 2016 when she said she wasn’t having a General Election.

“I know what’s changed and you know what’s changed, she read the opinion polls over the last two weeks and decided to go for a General Election.
“It’s pure opportunism on her part.”
No Tory party in Government has been so far ahead in the polls this close to a General Election. If the figures translated into votes, the result would outshine even Margaret Thatcher’s famous post Falklands victory in 1983, which saw the Tories secure 397 seats.
