Mel Giedroyc called friend Sue Perkins and expressed her doubts Bake Off would be a success
Mel presented the hit BBC show with sidekick Sue Perkins and reassured her comedy partner that no one would watch it and it would just be a good way to help pay their mortgages.
Mel, who is currently hosting BBC’s Let It Shine with Graham Norton, says: “When we filmed series one, hand on heart, I was phoning up Sue and saying, ‘Don’t worry, mate. No one’s going to watch this, it is a bit twee – we’re in a marquee with some bunting – this could have quite negative results for us. But no one’s going to see it, we’re paying off the mortgage, it’s a one-series wonder, don’t worry.’
“And then this thing happened. It was utterly bizarre, genuinely.”

We’re paying off the mortgage
But the 48-year-old felt that over time she and Sue were able to bring their own personalities into the equation.
“As the series progressed I think we managed to get in more of our own humour. I don’t remember a single gag making it into series one – it was pretty dull as far as we were concerned. And then as it grew I think they trusted us more.
“We were constantly teasing Paul [Hollywood] solidly. Most of it hit the cutting room floor.”
Mel and Sue presented the show, which saw Mary Berry and Paul judge amateur bakers for seven series from 2010 to 2016.
Only Paul will be back for the new Channel 4 version.

WHILE Beyoncé is no doubt overjoyed with the imminent pitter-patter of tiny feet not everyone is so happy with the announcement that she’s expecting twins.
According to US website TMZ, organisers of the hugely popular Coachella music festival in California, which the 35-year-old is due to play at in mid-April, were rather taken aback with the news because they had no knowledge of it when confirming her headlining slot.
Beyonce has announced she's pregnant with twins
The singer is believed to be between four and five months pregnant so will be just weeks away from giving birth.
It remains to be seen whether the event’s planners will come up with a contingency plan.
Guns N’ Roses singer Axl Rose played there last year in a throne-like chair having broken his foot two weeks previously.

Ed Sheeran's UK tour sold out in just minutes
ED SHEERAN fans have taken to social media to express their frustration that his UK tour sold out in just minutes.
The return to performing of the hugely popular 25-year-old following a 12-month hiatus only served to heighten interest with many complaining they’ve been unsuccessful.
One said: “Trying to get Ed Sheeran tickets has been impossible. Had tickets in my basket three times and the site crashed – such a joke.”
While another wrote: “Clicked on Ticketmaster at 10 exactly [the time they went on sale] held in a virtual queue, then told all tickets are gone, who the hell got these tickets?”
At least one successful Sheeranite seemed rather unsympathetic to those who missed out: “When you’re reading everyone’s tweets about Ed Sheeran tickets and you’re laughing because you’ve got four.”
Hugh Jackman will no longer play X-Men's Wolverine
FINALLY set to hang up his claws after nine films as Wolverine Hugh Jackman is most looking forward to… erm… gorging on bread.
“I am only excited about what is next and I am looking forward to eating some bread… regularly!” says the 48-year-old Aussie, who got through a 4,000 calorie a day diet of mainly chicken, steak, fish, brown rice and veg during his time preparing to play the Marvel mutant.
“I’m actually baking a lot of bread. I am looking forward to bread without guilt!”
In X-Men since 2000, Hugh feels the moment has come to step aside: “I’ve never had more fun playing him but it feels the right time to quit. It has been 17 years and I know this is the right time to finish.”
