Speaking to Sky News straight after the vote on Wednesday evening, Stephen Gethins warned of the “devastating” impact of leaving the European Union.

However, Mr Carswell hit back and called the vote, which allows the Government to begin the UK’s departure from the EU, “great news for democracy”.

The clash comes after the draft legislation was approved by 494 votes to 122 and now moves to the House of Lords.

Mr Cardwell said: “I think we can make this work, I think we’ve got to make this work. I genuinely hope that we can convince you [Mr Gethins] that it is actually a liberal journey, it’s not something to be feared.”

I’m fundamentally a liberal, I don’t think being a liberal is compatible with giving away your right of self-determination

The SNP MP fired back, warning the vote would have a “deep impact” on society.

“I think this is a hard Tory Brexit which will have a deep impact on people in our society,” he blasted.

“And I’m afraid to say Douglas, of course you know the Tories maybe trying to keep Ukip onside elsewhere, but Ukip have never even saved up a parliamentary deposit in a Scottish election.

“This debate has been irrelevant to us but we’re the ones who have to live with the consequences of a devastating move to leave the European Union.”

The Brexiteer said leaving the EU was about “taking back control” and that he wanted more power for Scotland too.

“I’m fundamentally a liberal, I don’t think being a liberal is compatible with giving away your right of self-determination,” said Mr Carswell.

“I’m a localist, I want to see more power, not just for Scotland but for Essex – I would like to see local counties being able to set higher environmental standards.

“I would like us as a country to take back control and pass powers outward and downward. I think this is great news for democracy and it’s great for those of us who want to be able to corporate with European ways that the EU has prevented us from cooperating.”
