Jay Howard and Scott Dixon collided during the 101st Indy 500
The McClaren-Honda driver swapped the Monaco Grand Prix for a spot in the Indy 500 racing against the likes of Will Power and Brit Max Chilton.
But the Indy 500 is one of the deadliest motorsport events in the world.
It has claimed the lives of 73 drives since it began in 1911, with 42 drivers, one motorcylist, 13 riding mechanics and 17 others losing their lives on the circuit.
Last week, Dale Coyne driver Sebastien Bourdais fractured his pelvis, a hip and two ribs when his Dale Coyne car smashed into the safety wall after he lost control at Turn 2 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway during qualifying for today's race.
And today Jay Howard lost control of his car and crashed into the safety barrier before bounding back in front of Scott Dixon's car sending the New Zealand driver spinning into the air.
The race was red flagged but thankfully the pair walked away unharmed after the horror crash.
