The former French ambassador to the US bemoaned Mr Trump's support of Brexit
François Bujon de l'Estang said the Republican’s pledge to put ‘America first’ has forever shifted the political status quo.
Mr Bujon de l'Estang added that Mr Trump was more interested in forging close ties with post-Brexit Britain.
Speaking to the French radio station Europe 1, he said: “Mr Trump has hailed Britain’s decision to leave the EU as a ‘great victory’ and has made it clear that Britain is more important to him than Brussels.
“He doesn’t care about what’s happening in Europe. He wants to ‘put America first’.”
The former ambassador added that Mr Trump was a “jingoist who sees the EU as a major threat to American supremacy,” and that the Brussels bloc would have to follow his lead by putting “Europe first”.
He said: “I know it sounds crazy but Mr Trump is here to stay. We need to buckle our seatbelts and keep them buckled, for another four years, at least.”

The nationalist Republican should, however, soften his approach now that he is president, Mr Bujon de l'Estang warned.
He said: “Mr Trump has no intention of changing. Winning the election didn’t change him and being president won’t change him either. But he must be careful, he is not a supreme leader and he does not rule supreme.
“Many Republicans have spoken out against him and have pledged to make his life difficult.”

Mr Bujon de l'Estang added that scrapping Obamacare on his first day in office was Mr Trump’s way of “distancing” himself from the Obama presidency.
He said: “It was a clean, highly symbolic break. He wanted his supporters to know that the Obama presidency is a thing of the past.”
