Grand National 2017: 40 runners confirmed
Punters are heaping money on favourite Definitly Red – because it’s the colour of their favourite team.
Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool supporters have all heaped cash on the 10-1 favourite.
And quaking bookies are terrified that if the deliberately misspelt Definitly Red wins they will owe punters £40 million.
Coral’s David Stevens said: “Already we know many thousands of fans of the Reds, Liverpool and Manchester United, have backed the horse as its odds plummet.
Arsenal fans have lumped on Definitly Red
“If it wins it could be a nightmare. We are bracing ourselves.”
Nicola McGeady, from Ladbrokes, agreed that fans of both clubs were “coming out in their droves” to get behind Definitly Red.
While Paddy Power added that Vieux Lion Rouge – the French for red – is also a worry.
He added: “Vieux Lion Rouge and Definitly Red have been a huge favourite amongst our punters – notably in areas where their local teams play in red, like Liverpool, Manchester and Sunderland.
“There’s also been a lot of bets on the horse in the North London area. Which may point to Arsenal fans lumping on – though they’re probably southern United fans.
“Also popular has been Saint Are, particularly on the south coast. Presumably that’s not from Pompey supporters!”
Meanwhile, the Duchess of Cambridge’s jockey pal Sam Waley-Cohen has another fancied ride this year, on 16-1 The Young Master.
