Buffon signed for Serie A giants Juventus from Parma in 2001 for a world record fee for a goalkeeper of £32.6million.
That is only just about to finally be eclipsed by Manchester City's impending £34.9million deal for Benfica's Ederson.
At 39, Buffon has won nearly everything in the game, with the Champions League the only trophy which has so far alluded him.
Heading into tonight's final with Real Madrid, Van der Sar was full of praise for the man that made him leave Turin 16 years ago.

"He's a gentle, nice guy also and to play for such a long time at such a high level and to combine with the national team, winning the World Cup also and the Euros, he's a fantastic guy.
"I think it's the only thing he hasn't won yet but having a World Cup in your trophy cabinet is not bad either and lots of Serie A titles."
