His Press Secretary Sean Spicer claimed this week: “The irony of this entire situation is that the president has been incredibly tough on Russia.
The German politician would like Trump to stop changing his mind and unite behind the Europe.
“At the same time, he fully expects to and wants to be able to get along with Russia, unlike previous administrations, so that we can solve many problems together facing the world, such as ISIS and terrorism.”
The Republican was previously under fire for drawing an apparent moral similarity between the US and the regime of Vladimir Putin in Russia, suggesting that while Mr Putin may be a "killer", the US is not "so innocent" either.
Trump alarmed European allies when he mentioned he wanted to see if he could make "some good deals" with Russia.
Erler also attacked Trump’s chief strategy advisor Steve Bannon, the former head of a far-right news website: ”One cannot really imagine that the thinking of this man is indeed the basis of the foreign policy of the most important world power.”

Trump on Wednesday dismissed the idea of any "Russian connection" in a tweet at the same time as a New York Times report that said members of his presidential campaign had contacts with Russian intelligence officials.
