Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare

GAMES FOR 2017 looks at what new games might be worth trying now that you’ve had those holiday 2016 launches in your collection for a while, this week looking at Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.

Call of Duty Infinite Warfare reviewed

The latest COD title from Activision started life as a controversial project, which saw many gamers focus on its far-future setting.

Following the success of Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, it appeared that fans weren’t ready for another look at how Warfare would be fought in years to come.

However, Activision also confirmed that Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare would have a special edition, including the Modern Warfare Remastered package, a hugely popular project that saw the full game recreated by Raven Software.

data-ad-format="auto">

In 2017, for those willing to pay the price, this is the package that is worth exploring and could prove the perfect combination for any COD fan out there.

For those who are looking for a new first-person shooter to try out and are interested in getting a lot of bang for their buck, Call of Duty Infinite Warfare is your answer.

While the single-player campaign fails to stand out in such a way that other past titles have, developers Infinity Ward have done their best to create something as unique as possible.

You play the role of Captain Reyes, who is on Earth when when the Settlement Defence Front (SDF) attack, sweeping you into the role of Commander of a spacecraft, who is ready to jump into his Jackal fighter and do what’s right.

The setting may be new – Space Warfare – but the tone and direction are very much within the core COD series, plenty of military jargon and immersion, even when facing a sci-fi setting.

Everything about it is well polished, there’s alot of decent dialogue and the characters themselves while not lovable, do feel realistic in a military setting.

The story itself treads a pretty well-known path, the bad guys are bad through and through, their hate of freedom needs to be sorted out pronto.

One note of caution is that this isn’t a game where realism of space had been given much note, sound travels well and if this bugs you, you may want to look elsewhere.

When it comes to gameplay, fans may have noticed more cover-shooting action then they remember in former COD titles.

It appears to have ratcheted up a bit in Infinite Warfare and is really something that can affect the pace of the action in the first-half of the campaign.

Side-missions are peppered into the flow of the game, and while it’s cool to walk around the spaceship you control, you may feel yourself counting down the minutes when you can jump into the next mission.

Some of the best parts of the campaign are when you have unlocked some of the cool new gadgets that can be used to avoid those cover moments and really smash through the enemy lines.

Unlocking this gear is up to you some of the time, you can decide what to do, which is a bit of a change for COD title, however, it can also sometimes feel like Infinite Warfare is trying to do a bit too much.

The stealth missions are fun and so are some of the Jackal fight you take part in but it doesn’t feel like these mechanics have really been worked into the game properly.

They feel a little tacked on but hopefully this points to more variations coming in future Call of Duty games.

For those who enjoy a solid first-person shooter campaign, Infinite Warfare will feel a little different and will start to impress by the second-half of the cycle.

By the end, the tempo has been turned up and gives you a great way to finish the game.

Having played the campaign to your heart's desire, you can then move onto the hulking multiplayer offered up in Infinite Warfare.

Like in much of what makes Infinite Warfare a compelling product to buy, the multiplayer really does stand out because of the amount of content on offer.

There are a huge range of modes to try out off the bat, as well as reward systems that refresh how you can earn new keys or weapons for your loadout.

The loadout system itself has kept the 10 point option from Black Ops 3, meaning you have to way up what is important to your style of play.

It’s a great little way of tinkering how you play the game and I’d expect you will dedicate some time to working out what things are worth sacrificing for a better chance of surviving.

The new Rigs should help you define your style of player as well, some are built for speed, maximum damage, or evasion.

They also offer a series of perks to choose from, which should help you decide how you want to create an advantage over your enemies.

The gameplay itself is fast, furious and often frustrating.

This isn’t because it is rubbish, more that I’m pretty rubbish at taking enemies down.

Having played it for a while now, I have managed to develop a few loadouts that keep me competitive, however, there will always be those players out there that can end your run in a second.

The combat is still very fast-paced and like in other COD titles, there is no hiding from the enemy.

Infinite Warfare Multiplayer and Zombies Mode Screenshots REVEALED

New Infinite Warfare Multiplayer and Zombies Mode Screenshots have been revealed by Activision during the Call of Duty XP celebrations in LA.

Infinite Warfare Multiplayer at Call of Duty XP

The maps that have been created, or recreated for Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare are of a good quality and appear to have been fleshed out in enough ways that you can find your own path.

My own concern has been with how spawning can sometimes leave you in a tight spot, the game is quick enough as it is, you don’t need to be brutally taken down just after loading back in as well.

Some maps also boast wall-running lanes where you can find yourself at a huge advantage, or a massive loss.

You’ll notice that those players who know where these places are will do a lot better on average, however, that seems a just reward for learning the level.

And if you get sick of wall-running and rig-picking escapades you can switch to Modern Warfare Remastered, whose multiplayer gives you a test of completely different kind.

The pace is slower, players can be sneakier and it can be be a joy to see people who used to play these styles of shooters regain the upper hand over slip-sliding enemies.

What Modern Warfare doesn’t have is Zombies in Spaceland, a silly mode where you can team up and take on the living dead.

Stuck in abandoned theme park with three other players, you need to survive waves of the undead, while unlocking new power-ups and weapons.

It’s a nice change in tone from the mind-boggling story from Black Ops 3, you can take a break from working out what is going on and just concentrate on not being blown up by gruesome clowns.

Fortune cards can be used to change the rules and help keep you alive for a little while and players will still need to think about when it's best to open up the next part of the park, or stay put and save up the cash for a better weapon.

The zombies themselves can be a little over-reaching at times, being killed abruptly when you thought you had plenty of space to get by, but this all part of the fun.

When you do die, you can earn your way back by completing a number of tasks, a fun little feature that will keep your mind off how bad you just let your friends down.

Ultimately, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare excels on the multiplayer front but also boasts something that some of its competitors have failed at.

Infinite Warfare provides buckets of content, be it campaign, multiplayer modes or zombies action, you get your money's worth and it feels good.

It’s even better if you can grab a cheap copy of it now with Modern Warfare Remastered included, the sheer amount of stuff to do with the bundle makes it the perfect buy for those looking for something new to try out.
