Kevin Hurley told BBC Radio 5Live it was a “simple” fact that UK police officers should be armed if we are “serious” about our protection.
He praised the eight minute reaction time of armed response units in London, who shot and killed three terrorists who had killed seven people and injured 48 more during a deadly attack on London Bridge on Saturday night.
Mr Hurley said: “It took 480 seconds, it takes three seconds to stab someone to death.
“When someone goes on the rampage, intent on killing, they will continue killing until they are stopped.
A furious debate has ensued over armed police after a spate of terror attacks in the UK.
“If we want the police to be able to protect us we cannot expect unarmed police officers to do the job, they will just be killed or stabbed themselves like we learned a lot of them were.”
Praising the “great job” done by the firearms officers, Mr Hurley offered a terrifying opinion on the potential death toll if the terrorists had opted to attack a smaller city in the United Kingdom.
He added: “If we are serious that we want our police to protect us then we need the first responder police to all carry firearms – it’s as simple as that.
“Otherwise, if we’re happy to let people be slaughtered, and there will be many more, then let’s carry on as we are, fooling ourselves – having heavily armed swat teams around our cities will stop this in time.”
Former Conservative MP and homeland security spokesman Patrick Mercer warned Britons to expect another attack in days, not weeks.
He told Talkradio listeners that they should be prepared and expecting “our enemies” to strike at any time, especially with the impending General Election on Thursday.
Mr Mercer claimed he fears an attack so much he advises his son, who works in central London, to carry something to use as a bandage and asks his friends if they know first aid.

He said: “I don’t think the next attack is going to be in two weeks time, I think it is probably going to be in two days time.
“I think we’ve got to harden our hearts, expect this and frankly get on with it because we’ve got an election coming up on Thursday and our enemies are going to try and disrupt further.

As police continue their investigations following the June 3 terror attacks, a block of flats in Barking is raided for possible suspects
“What we can do about it in the short-term is the fact the Government has to be blunt about this, they’ve got to deliver a message, there’s going to be more attacks.
“Stop them by being alert, no more complacent, no more wake up calls, understand our attackers live among us.
“In the days of the IRA there was no political correctness, people were told you’re going to be attacked.
“We must stop incorrect political correctness in order to save lives.”
