Fern Britton revealed she suffered complications after a routine operation
Just days after an hysterectomy last summer, the 59-year-old became seriously ill and could barely walk due to the intense pain.
The former This Morning presenter suffered in agony and later underwent tests where doctors discovered she had several abscesses and E.coli.
But the traumatic ordeal didn’t end there as she contracted pneumonia which resulted in a collapsed lung.

Disclosing her secret battle, Fern told Prima Magazine: “This time last year I was fighting for my life. I’d gone into hospital on July 13 for a routine hysterectomy (which I had needed to deal with long-standing fibroids), four days before my birthday.
“The procedure – which was carried out at a local private hospital – went well and I received fantastic care. But when I came home three days later, the problems began.”
When the mother-of-four called the hospital, they suggested she took paracetamol and a “wait-and-see approach” but the pain soon intensified.
Fern later called an ambulance after being sick, but when they arrived she refused to go to hospital as she was feeling better, she said: “That was quite a bad decision.”

On the night of the procedure, I was resigned to dying
The next day she was having “muscle contractions in her abdomen” and in desperation her husband, This Morning chef Phil Vickery, rang the doctor’s reception to send an ambulance.
Fern added: “It’s no exaggeration to say that I owe her my life”.
Hospital tests revealed she had E.coli in her blood and severe abscesses in her abdomen which required emergency surgery.
She continued: “On the night of the procedure, I was resigned to dying… The theatre nurse offered to put a plaster over my wedding ring. Instead, I took off my ring and gave it to my daughter, who was with me.

“I hated the thought of them taking it from my dead body to give to her. So, I said, ‘You look after it for me’.”
But the nightmare continued, Fern added: “A day or so later, I developed pneumonia and my lung collapsed. But I pulled through, thanks to the incredible NHS team who looked after me beyond anything I could have hoped for.”
