One person has died in a “serious collision” involving two vehicles which closed the M23 motorway near Gatwick Airport.
The southbound carriageway was closed between junctions eight for Redhill and nine for the airport at about midnight.
At 07:00 BST, Highways England said the road was expected to be re-opened “imminently”.
Motorists heading to Gatwick Airport were being warned to allow extra time for their journeys.
Earlier, Highways England reported that motorists had been left trapped in queues of traffic, but it later tweeted vehicles were being “slowly” released.
