Eddie Jones was recommended to include Sam Underhill by Richard Hill
The 20-year-old is being billed as England’s first specialist No 7 since the man he plays opposite at Twickenham, Steffon Armitage, briefly filled the jersey.
Now available to England having signed for Bath from the Ospreys, Underhill will have a lot of attention on him.
England have not done too badly without an out-and-out fetcher under Jones with 16 wins out of 17 but the Australian’s idea of a complete side involves an open-side flanker worthy of the name.
Sam Underhill is set to make his England debut against the Barbarians
It was a conversation with England manager Richard Hill, then Underhill’s mentor, which alerted Jones to his potential.
“I told Richard Hill ‘I can’t see any natural sevens in England’ and Hilly said ‘Well you’ve got to see this bloke play’. He was right,” said Jones.
“He is at the start of what is potentially a Test career so I expect him to do the fundamentals well, make his tackles, do his clearouts and be a link player.
“He is certainly a player at training who has impressed. He has a nice mature way about him, he is a very hard worker off the field and he has made a really stand out impression in his first few days here.
