Two Eurofighter Typhoons were scrambled to escort a Jet Airways Boeing 777 as it flew across Cologne in western Germany.
Dramatic footage captured from a British Airways plane flying above the planes shows the fighters speeding alongside the Indian passenger plane.
The Jet Airways plane was travelling to London from Mumbai and the two fighters were soon able to establish contact with the plane.
After restoring communication with the Jet Airways pilot the two Typhoons returned to base.

A Facebook page titled ‘Circus Pilot’ posted the footage of the Typhoons, which are also used by the RAF.
They wrote: “This incredible footage shows the German Air Force intercepting a Jet Airways 777-300ER bound for London (from Mumbai) yesterday after it failed to respond on the appropriate ATC frequencies.
“The trailing British Airways plane captured the footage near Cologne Germany.
“The JA pilots saw the Eurofighters and after speaking over emergency frequencies the plane carried onto London.”
Earlier in February two RAF jets were scrambled to confront Russian bombers which had spent more than five hours on the outskirts of British airspace.

A pair of Russian Tu-160 ‘Blackjack’ bombers entered the UK’s area of interest on February 9 at around 10am.
In another security incident RAF fighter jets were scrambled to escort a plane flying from Pakistan to London after reports a wanted man was onboard the flight.
The Pakistan International Airlines flight was travelling to Heathrow but was then diverted to London Stansted.
When the plane landed, Essex police officers boarded the flight and arrested a 52-year-old man.

The incident took place over Cologne in western Germany
He was arrested on suspicion of committing fraud offences in the UK and was transferred to a London police station.
The Ministry of Defence said: “Quick Reaction Alert Typhoon aircraft were launched this afternoon from RAF Coningsby to intercept a civilian aircraft.
"The aircraft was intercepted and safely escorted to Stansted Airport.”
