During a swearing-in ceremony for senior staff in his administration on Sunday, Mr Trump flashed the letter which had “Mr President” penned on the front.
Traditionally outgoing presidents leave letters to their successors in the White House.
Although he said he had been touched its contents, the Republican refused to divulge what was written inside.

Speaking to the press, he said: “I walked into the Oval Office and found this beautiful letter from President Obama.
“It was really very nice of them to do that and we will cherish that.”
Quickly returning the letter back to his pocket as he stood alongside Vice President Mike Pence, Mr Trump joked: “We will keep that and we won’t even tell the press what is in that letter.”

In the US, it’s common practice for the departing president to leave a note offering advice to their successor.
Publicised on the day of Donald Trump’s inauguration on Friday, Mr Bush wrote: “Very few have had the honor [sic] of knowing the responsibility you now feel.
“Very few know the excitement of the moment and the challenges you will face.
“There will be trying moments. The critics will rage. Your ‘friends’ will disappoint you.”

The 45th president described how it had been a “very interesting few days” in office so far as he continued his address on Sunday.
“Prime Minister May will be coming over to the United States shortly,” President Trump said.
“We're also meeting with the prime minister of Canada and we will be meeting with the president of Mexico, who I know.”

Although his four-year term as president is just getting under way, Mr Trump hinted he was already going to run for a second term.
“All of the people in this room we are going to do some great things over the next eight years.
“It's a great group of people. And if they're not, I'm going to let you know about it,” he quipped.
