Riots break out in Washington DC as activists smash the windows of Bank of America branch
Donald Trump vowed to put "America first" and said "America will start winning again like never before" moments after being sworn in, as riot police gear up for protests as hundreds of thousands of people descended on Washington DC for the ceremony.
Making his first speech as president, he said: “Today’s ceremony has very special meaning.
“We are not just transferring power from one party to another.
“We are transferring power from Washington DC and giving it back to you, the people.”
The 45th president of the US built on his 'we will make America great again slogan' in his first speech as commander-in-chief.
He said: “We the citizens of America are now joined to rebuild this country and restore its promise for all of our people. “Together we will determine the course of America and the world for many years to come.
“We will face challenges, we will confront hardships but we will get the job done.”
The billionaire businessman said every decision on trade, tax and foreign affairs "will be made to benefit American workers and American families" to huge applause.
He added: "We will shine for everyone to follow" as he pledged to build relations with the world, eradicate Islamic terrorism and protect US borders.
Vice-president-elect Mike Pence was earlier sworn in by Clarence Thomas, the associate justice of the Supreme Court.
Protests broke out as the two couples met at the White House with anti-Trump activists dressed in black smashing the window of a Bank of America branch in the capital.

Streets near the president's home were blocked to traffic by empty buses and dump trucks or temporary pedestrian security checkpoints where law enforcement officers and National Guard troops checked people's bags.
Checkpoints around the National Mall in front of the Capitol opened early to begin admitting guests, some of them wearing red caps bearing Mr Trump's "Make America Great Again" slogan.
They were barred from bringing selfie sticks, coolers for beverages, and long umbrellas despite the rainy weather.
