Elvis Costello is raising awareness of charity Music & Memory
He says: “For millions of people with dementia, a personal music player loaded with their favourite songs can reconnect them to an entire world.”
Elvis – whose real name is Declan Patrick MacManus – is raising awareness of Music & Memory. The charity provides elderly people suffering from neurodegenerative disorders with music devices and personalised playlists to play on them.
He credits the organisation with “helping people unlock memories and rediscover the soundtrack of their lives”.
The 62-year-old has witnessed first hand the positive effect that music can have on sufferers. Elvis’s 1989 hit Veronica – co-written with Sir Paul McCartney – was about his grandmother’s battle with dementia.
The musician believes we can help dementia suffers by playing them music
And when his father started exhibiting symptoms of Parkinson’s-related dementia the Londoner ensured that his dad could listen to specially selected tunes at all times.
A personal music player loaded with their favourite songs can reconnect them to an entire world
Speaking to Rolling Stone magazine he explains: “I insisted that an iPad playing his favourite music – and a scrolling album of family photographs – be visible and audible to him during his waking hours. At times when little else penetrated his torments and distress it was music rather than spoken word that reached him.
“On a few occasions he emerged through an apparent fog to state the identity of a singer or gather a tune in a voice that was still surprisingly melodious and true at a time when his speech was reduced to a hoarse whisper.”

She says: “There are not enough parts for what I call mature actresses so rather than just complaining I decided I’ll write a play.”
The result is Silver Lining, a comedy set in a retirement home. True to her word, the cast includes five mature women.
Despite the 58-year-old taking over from Stephen Fry as host of BBC One’s QI, she still feels older ladies are too often ignored.
“Old women become invisible and overlooked in life. That’s true on the stage and it’s true in life.” Silver Lining, which has received mixed reviews, is on tour until April.
Sir Mick Jagger's velvet flare trousers will go up for auction
Mick's old flares bring satisfaction
A pair of trousers once owned by Sir Mick Jagger are set to go under the hammer with an estimated value of £8,000.
The velvet flares were made for the snake-hipped Rolling Stones front man during the 1960s when the band were finding fame with hits such as (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.
Sir Mick, 73, shared the pants with his band mate Keith Richards, 73, before giving them to country singer Gram Parsons (who died aged 26 in 1973).
The, ahem, delightful description on US-based RR Auction website reads: “In very good condition, with extensive wear from use and some staining to back.”
The highest bidder will also receive a set of photos of the rock ’n’ roll trio wearing the vintage garment. It’s tempting… but we think we’ll give it a miss.
