Manchester United are expected to face a fight this summer to hold on to De Gea.

Real Madrid have been long-term admirers of the Spain international and were extremely close to signing him in 2015 only for the deal to fall through after the paperwork wasn't signed off in time.

The La Liga giants are reportedly readying a return bid for De Gea this summer and they see him as a long-term custodian at the Bernabeu.

And according to Marca, Madrid believe De Gea has a £55million release clause in his contract at United and they are willing to match that fee.

Swiftly after Madrid's failed bid for De Gea in 2015, the 26-year-old put pen to paper on a new four-year contract worth £200,000-a-week at Old Trafford.

His contract has an optional year extensions that United will be hoping to enact in the next few months to fend off interest from Madrid in the summer.

But the report claims Madrid are confident they can convince De Gea to return to the Spanish capital where he began his career with Atletico Madrid.

De Gea recently answered questions over his future amid rumours linking him once again with Madrid.

"The future no one knows," De Gea told Spanish outlet AS.

"The future is the future. I'm very happy here, it's a great club.

"In England football is much enjoyed. I will not talk about that [Real Madrid]. I will not talk about it anymore. Now I have to stay focused with my club."
