Dan Evans achieved the greatest win of his career… but wasn't even sponsored
DAN EVANS produced the greatest win of his tennis career yesterday – in kit he bought after dashing to the shops here when he lost his sponsor.

Evans, 26, from Birmingham, produced a sensational performance to beat Croatia’s World No 7 Marin Cilic 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-3 in the third round of the Australian Open.
But the British No 3 had to do it in hastily cobbled-together gear.
His contract with Nike ran out at the end of last year and with no sponsor and no shirts or shorts, he had to scamper into the city to buy something to wear.

The first shopping trip was at the weekend and then, just to be on the safe side, he nipped out for some more before yesterday’s match.
“I just went to the store and bought a load of clothes the other day, plain clothes,” he said. “It’s Uniqlo. The shirts are 19.99 (Australian dollars).
“I think I got about 18 shirts. I went back this morning to buy some more. They’re not the best quality, to sweat in and wash them.

“But I only wore one shirt today. I’m good till Friday. We’re good.”
Evans, who now meets Australia’s big-serving Bernard Tomic, would like to renew his deal with Nike but they also sponsor Britain’s No 2, Kyle Edmund, and he is doubtful that the American company would want to back two British players. So far, he has had no other offers.
“I’ve not had any at the minute anyway,” he said. “We’ll see. Another win, I might get one.”
