Despite some past reports, the actor has revealed that the high-profile role in the ITV soap has had a “100 per cent positive” response from fans.
Speaking to the latest issue of OK! Magazine, the star opened up about one member of the public’s harrowing account as well as his real-life proposal to wife Emily Bowker.
When asked about Bethany Platt’s (played by Lucy Fallon) grooming storyline at the hands of her fiancé Nathan, Chris commented: “The response has been 100 per cent positive.
“Just the other day I was standing on a platform and one of the train guards shared his story of abuse with me. I’ve had lumps in my throat over the response.”

Chris, who joined the long-running drama last year, went on: “One headline made out I’d been attacked in the street, but that’s not true.
“Some people are just so excited because they love Coronation Street, and then other people are on the verge of tears because they’re saying it’s happened to them or they’re worried about their niece or a family member.”

Chris added: “When you actually look at the enormous response, it underlines that the story has the continued backing and support of the charities we work with, the survivors and the victims we talk to, and the vast majority of mums, dads, sons and daughters who communicate with us.

“It is nasty – sexual abuse is a horrific, life-changing crime – but perpetrators succeed because of people’s shame and fear. It thrives in secrecy. Corrie is a small part in a big movement to stop these predators getting away with their crimes.”
Meanwhile, during their candid chat, Chris and Emily also spoke of their low-key proposal ahead of their wedding in 2014.
Emily stated: “It was quite shocking. We didn’t really know what to do with ourselves after, so we just frolicked around this field, and then we found a wheelbarrow.”
“I picked Emily up and put her in it! Then I pushed her around for 10 minutes and we were both just hysterically laughing,” Chris recalled.

Coronation Street continues tomorrow at 7.30pm on ITV.
