Tiote died after collapsing during a training session with his Chinese Super League club Beijing Enterprises.
He was rushed to hospital but sadly passed away.
"I'm still in a bit of a shock, so had to hear about what's happened to Cheick," an emotional Lovenkrands said on Sky Sports.
"I was one of his biggest admirers at the club, he was a fantastic player in the squad.
"He was a player who would always give 100 and 10 per cent on the pitch and in training.
"He was one of the players if you didn't pull your foot away in tackles you would get hurt because he would never hold back.

"It's just mind-boggling for me to hear what's happened, especially with a guy who was so fitness-orientated and so sharp in training and in games.
"That it could happen to him is a bit of a shock."
Lovenkrands spent two years with Tiote at Newcastle and was impressed with him as soon as he arrived from FC Twente in 2010.
He has compared his playing style to that of Chelsea star N'Golo Kante.
Cheick Tiote was at Newcastle for seven years before leaving in February
"His first season when he came to us at Newcastle I was so surprised at how good he was, he was absolutely amazing," he added.
"To have him at holding midfield, winning all the battles, he was like what Kante was doing at Chelsea and did for Leicester.
"He was that type of player that just lied there, you knew you had security with him lying in front of the defence helping out.
"He scored that unbelievable goal against Arsenal in the 4-4 draw that they'll never forget.
"He could also bring further up the pitch. For me he was really highly thought of in my thoughts and in my mind."
The Nigerian only left St James' Park for China in February this year.
He made 11 appearances for Beijing Enterprises before his untimely passing.
