Virat Kohli wants India to tighten up on fielding
On a day lacking any sort of flow owing to frequent interruptions from the rain at a packed Edgbaston, Kohli’s outfit set a total of 319-3.
In reply Pakistan were never in the hunt despite rain shifting the goalposts a couple of times, eventually shelled out for 164.
Kohli was delighted with the win but critical of his side’s rusty performance in the field where there were several errors and a couple of dropped catches.
“With the bat and ball, that was right up there – I would say nine out of 10. In the field we were still six. But it was still a very strong performance,” he said.
India got their Champions Trophy defence off to a flying start
“We will need to tighten our fielding to compete hard against the best teams. But I am quite delighted with all batsmen chipping in with runs.”
Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Kohli and Yuvraj Singh all weighed in with half centuries, the last named with a 32-ball 53.
Kohli was particularly impressed with Yuvraj. “I felt like a club batsman while I was playing alongside him. The way he was hitting the ball was outstanding.”
India face Sri Lanka on Thursday at The Oval but have taken a big step towards the semi-finals with this victory.

Australia will need to beat Bangladesh at the London venue today to make similar progress with defeat likely to leave their hopes hanging by a thread.
After criticising his fast bowlers for an under-par performance against New Zealand, Australia captain Steve Smith says he expects a reaction against Bangladesh.
“They were pretty fiery in the nets and I copped quite a few short so maybe they are listening,” he said.
“Hopefully that was a little bit of rust and hopefully that has gone now. We have a class bowling attack so hopefully they can bring their A game.”
