The spray was enough to fend off the gun-wielding robber, who fled the West Midlands store empty handed.

The astonishing moment was captured on the shop’s CCTV and has since been released by police who are now trying to track down the criminal responsible for the 9 January attack.

In the footage, the thug can be seen brandishing a weapon as he grabs hold of a customer and demands the shopkeeper hands over money from the till.

Undeterred by the shocking events unfolding in front of him, the brave Walsall shop worker scrambles for the can of aerosol underneath the counter.

Heroically, he then runs around the ledge and begins spraying the thief in the face all while a gun is pointed directly at him.

As scuffles break out, the crook makes a dash for the door, running from the shop without any loot.

The video has since been released by West Midlands police – who are hunting for the suspect following the raid on the Kobani Store in West Bromwich Street, Walsall.

Officers have since lauded the praise of the shop’s 39-year-old owner for his courageous actions.

Det Con Gerry Maley, from Walsall’s CID, said: “We would like to commend the bravery of the owner who refused to hand over cash after the man threatened him.

"This must have been a terrifying experience for him and refused to be intimidated by someone who was armed.

"We are now appealing to anyone who recognises the man in the image to come forward with a name.”

Detectives believe two other people may have also been in on the raid and were waiting by the door as events unfolded.

"We are determined to find those responsible and we are sure that someone will be able to identify the suspects,” Det Con Maley said.

Anyone with information is urged to contact DC Gerry Maley on 101 and quote 20WS/7007D/17.
