United will face Southampton at Wembley on February 26 but suffered the indignity of losing 2-1 to struggling Hull and seeing their 17-match unbeaten run destroyed.

Midfielder Carrick said of his team’s stuttering display: “We got away with it. I’m just disappointed to be honest, with the way we played and losing the game.

“It’s a strange feeling in many ways, we wanted to keep our run going and our form going.

“We didn’t play well at all. Of course we are delighted to be there (in the final), we’ll shake it off and bounce into the next game.

“We expected a tough game, we expected them to come at us because they had to. We just didn’t play well for a number of reasons and we’re disappointed. We don’t like losing but we can take a final from it, so we are delighted to be there. We’re still very, very disappointed.”

Manchester United sneaked past Hull to secure a place in the EFL Cup final with Southampton

The game was under control and we deserved to be in the final, so I congratulated my players

Jose Mourinho

Mourinho aimed a thinly-veiled dig at referee Jon Moss after Manchester United stumbled into the final.

Hull opened the scoring through Tom Huddlestone’s penalty, awarded by Moss after the official spotted Marcos Rojo’s shirt pull on Harry Maguire. Yet United replied through Paul Pogba to ensure Oumar Niasse’s late strike was mere consolation for the spirited hosts.

Jose Mourinho said: “To speak about the performance, I have to speak about things I don’t want to speak about because the game was totally under control – the game was dead.

“The game was what we wanted the game to be and something happened (Huddlestone’s penalty) to open the game – and then the game was open.

“But we had more power and were the best team. We could have scored lots of goals in the first match.

“Like I said, the game was under control and we deserved to be in the final, so I congratulated my players. I don’t want to analyse the performance too much.

“I don’t want to speak about the performance or the penalty.

“I don’t think we are favourites against nobody. It doesn’t matter where we are play or against who – we are never favourites.”

Hull manager Marco Silva is fighting against the odds to beat the drop and last night saw key man Robert Snodgrass seal a move to West Ham.

Silva said: “I know the deal is possibly close in the next few hours.

“In the last few days, the player hasn’t trained with us.

“I know what I want in terms of replacement, but the January market is not an easy market.”

On his team’s display, Silva added: “I see progress game by game – I always see progress.

“I see the players taking more confidence.

“We will try and my work is always to try and keep my players, but sometimes the club want one thing and the manager wants one thing.

“It is important that we won the game. We have won three games in a row at home and when I arrived we had won once in two months. I congratulated the players in the dressing room.

“Sure I hope to improve the squad with three or four players. We need them. We have 15 or 16 players, it’s not normal at this level.”
