He dismissed attempts to link his presidential campaign with allies of Vladimir Putin and said the claims were merely an attempt to cover up Hillary Clinton's election "mistakes".
The president took to Twitter this lunchtime and said: "This Russian connection non-sense is merely an attempt to cover-up the many mistakes made in Hillary Clinton's losing campaign."
Eleven minutes later he added: "Information is being illegally given to the failing @nytimes & @washingtonpost by the intelligence community (NSA and FBI?).Just like Russia"
His comments came after the New York Times and CNN claimed officials within the Kremlin had regular contact with Donald Trump's team during the run-up to last November's election.
This claim was also dismissed by Russia who described the story as "laughable".

CNN reported this week there were several close links between Mr Trump and Mr Putin during the election.
In a highly controversial report they said: "High-level advisers close to then-presidential nominee Donald Trump were in constant communication during the campaign with Russians known to US intelligence, multiple current and former intelligence."
The report claimed then-campaign chairman Paul Manafort was “regularly” communicating with Russian contacts during the election – a claim he vehemently denies.
