At least two people have been killed in the clashes
Security forces and armed attackers are locked in a bitter battle inside the 400-bed Sardar Mohammad Daud Khan hospital in Kabul.
At least one of the attackers entered the building dressed as a doctor and began to fire an AK-47.
Hospital worker Abdul Nadir said he saw one gunman, dressed in a doctor’s coat, pull out an AK-47 assault rifle and shoot a hospital worker and a patient.
The area around the hospital has been blocked off by security forces as they desperately attempt to regain control.
Smoke can be seen billowing from the building
No one has immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, although a number of account on social media suggest ISIS may be responsible the incident.
Last year, a Taliban suicide attack in Kabul left 64 people dead after bombers targeted Afghanistan's national security agency – again close to the US embassy.
