Emergency services rushed to Dalston Kingsland Overground station following reports of a fire at the London station.

London Overground said it believes a customer battery pack caused the explosion.

British Transport Police says the incident is not being treated as suspicious.

Hackney Council said there are “several walking wounded” and are warning residents to avoid the area as passengers were seen jumping onto the tracks.

Passenger Aaron Webb said there was “sheer terror and panic onboard” the train.

He tweeted: "Highest praise to @metpoliceuk & @LondonFire this morning for rapid response to incident at Dalston Kingsland. Sheer terror & panic onboard".

British Transport Police say the train had an electrical fault as firefighters were called to the scene.

At least three people were injured on the train as it waited at a platform as witnesses reported seeing smoke coming from the carriage.

British Transport Police said in a statement: “We were called at 7.10am today to Dalston Junction to reports of smoke on a train.


“Several passengers left the train as a result of the smoke.

“Fire service also attended and established that a workman’s drill had overheated and was smoking.

“A number of people have sustained minor injuries and were treated by the ambulance service at the scene.

“This incident is not being treated as suspicious at this time.”

In a tweet, Hackney Fire Brigade said: “Crews were investigating an electrical issue with a train to ensure safety. All declared safe!”

Overground services between Canonbury and Stratford have been suspended causing travel chaos for commuters.

A man in a high-visibility jacket can be heard telling commuters "it was a small fire", and Deejay Robert K, who posted the clip, said smoke was causing "chaos".

It is understood London Ambulance Service and police were at the scene and the train was evacuated at around 7.14am.

The Metropolitan Police in Hackney tweeted that there had been a "reported issue with electrics on the train in the station", but it has since been declared safe.

London Fire Brigade in Hackney said crews from Stoke Newington were called to the incident.
