Bernie Sanders told Newsnight TPP was a 'disaster'
The left-winger hailed President Trump’s swift move to sign an executive order to withdraw the US from the 12-nation trade deal – fulfilling a promise the Republican made several times during the campaign trail.
While the deal was largely symbolic as it had not yet been signed off by US Congress, the move effectively rips up Obama’s Asia policy.
I’m glad Trump followed through and has gotten us out of the TPP
Bernie Sanders commended Trump on Newsnight: “The current trade policies that we have, which include NAFTA, CAFTA and permanent normal trade relations with China have been a disaster for the American worker because many large corporations have shut down production here and moved to low-wage countries all over the world.
“We’ve lost many millions of decent paying jobs so I campaigned very strongly against the TPP and I’m glad Trump followed through and has gotten us out of the TPP.”
During the signing of the executive orders, President Trump told the gaggle of photographers “everyone knows what that means, right? We’ve been talking about this for a long time”.

Trump claimed signing the document was a “great thing for the American worker", holding up the executive order to show reporters.
Despite praising the Republican’s bold move in the face of free-trade advocates, Senator Sanders claimed the former business tycoon must move the production of his business empire from overseas and back to the US.
The 75-year-old told Emily Maitlis: “If Trump is going to be honest with the American people, what he has also got to do is to withdraw his manufacturing from countries like Mexico, Bangladesh, Turkey and China where he is paying very low wages.
