Laptops, tablets and large phones will be banned from the affected UK-bound flights
Yesterday the British Government announced the UK was going to join the US in banning airline passengers from carrying laptops, cameras and other large electronic devices onboard flights from the Middle East and North Africa due to security reasons.
Today the Department for Transport announced the ban must come into place by this Saturday – just three days time.
Airline passengers travelling to the UK on direct flights from Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia are to be banned from carrying laptops and other large electronic devices onboard.
UK-based airlines affected are British Airways, Easyjet, Jet2, Monarch, Thomas Cook and Thomson.
Overseas airlines affected by the UK ban are Turkish Airlines, Pegasus Airways, Atlas-Global Airlines, Middle East Airlines, Egyptair, Royal Jordanian, Tunis Air, Saudia.
Theresa May’s spokesman said passengers will have to check electronic items into hold luggage.
He said passengers will not be allowed in plane cabins with phones, laptops or tablets larger than 16cm in length, 9.3cm width and 1.5cm depth.
Downing Street said the Prime Minister has chaired several aviation security meetings in recent weeks but refused to confirm if there was a specific threat.
A Government spokesman said: “The safety and security of the travelling public is our highest priority. That is why we keep our aviation security under constant review and put in place measures we believe are necessary, effective and proportionate.
“The Prime Minister has chaired a number of meetings on aviation security over the last few weeks, including this morning, where it was agreed that new aviation security measures on all inbound direct flights to the UK from the following countries will be introduced: Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia.
“We have been in close touch with the Americans to fully understand their position.
“Airlines affected are being informed of the new requirements."
This is breaking news.
