The Brit fell to a 6-2, 6-7, 8-10 defeat to Jennifer Brady as Watson just ran out of steam against her American opponent.
Brady managed to withstand early pressure to ensure 24-year-old Watson didn't match her 2013 effort of reaching the third round Down Under.
