The Gunners have lacked natural leadership on the pitch over the past few years.
Current skipper Per Mertesacker hasn't even featured this term after picking up an injury during pre-season.
And Redknapp thinks the north London outfit need to take this into account when buying players.
“The captain shares some of the manager’s responsibility to make things a bit easier,” Redknapp told the London Evening Standard.
“Arsene takes it all on himself and that’s maybe why he doesn’t see how important a strong captain is.
“He was very lucky to have Tony when he arrived at Arsenal and Patrick Vieira was a powerful presence, but Arsenal haven’t really had a genuine leader for years.
“Characters like that are a dying breed but if Arsene stays on next season, identifying a new signing to become captain must be a top priority.”
