David Seaman believes Arsene Wenger will remain calm in the FA Cup final
Defeat in the FA Cup final against Chelsea tomorrow, and the pressure on the Frenchman to go may become unbearable, even though the Arsenal board have offered a two-year contract.
But whatever happens at Wembley, former Arsenal hero David Seaman believes Wenger will not change his ways. He will be calm, cool and thoughtful. Just like he always has been.
There will be no shouting in the dressing room, no throwing of cups or kicking chairs. It is not the Wenger way – and it never has been.
Former England goalkeeper Seaman won two league titles and three FA Cups in seven years working under the Frenchman and he said: “In the dressing room before kick off, Arsene won’t say a lot.
“His work is done. It is done in training and then in preparation. In the lead up to the game, he will maybe go through set-pieces, who is picking who up at corners and things like that.
Arsene Wenger is yet to announce whether he will sign a new contract at Arsenal
“One of the strangest things that used to happen at half time was that you’d come in and you would have to sit down and be quiet. Get your drink, your energy bars or whatever and sit down.
“There was one time when we were getting beat at Highbury and our assistant manager Pat Rice came in shouting. Arsene, in front of all of us, just went “Pat! Sit down and be quiet!’.
“We were stunned.
“You’d sit down and gather your thoughts for 10 minutes, maybe have a few little words with whoever was next to you. I had Lee Dixon next to me.
“Then, the last two or three minutes before we went out, Arsene would say what he wanted. I’m sure he hasn’t changed.”

When Wenger first arrived at Arsenal in the autumn of 1996 he revolutionised everything at the club – training, diets, preparation, every detail.
Now, though, Seaman fears that other teams have caught up.
He said: “I always remember going off with England after Arsene had been with us for a year or two.
“All the Manchester United and the Liverpool players would be looking over onto our table to see what we were eating. They wanted to find out because they knew that we were on this special diet. Once they saw it, they got on it.
“Clubs have caught Arsenal up and overtaken us.
“It would be the Arsenal lads looking now but there are not many of them in the England squad.”
As for the match, he added: “I wouldn’t say that it would be one of his greatest triumphs if Arsenal can win today. But it would be so satisfying. For me and I’m sure for a lot of other players. Just to shut people up and give Arsene the respect that he deserves.
“Having said that, it’s still only an FA Cup. It’s not anywhere near the Premier League. Even last year when we finished second, Arsenal were nowhere near winning it.
“Arsenal have to take their chances because Chelsea will create chances. They don’t have a weak link. You don’t have a weak link when you can win the League. Nobody can find one, can they?”
