The Atletico Madrid forward has been the subject of interest from Manchester United for months.
But things have taken a drastic turn in the last 24 hours that have suggested a move could be off.
Express Sport understands Jose Mourinho has cooled his interest in the forward as he is now prioritising a new No 9 following Zlatan Ibrahimovic's injury woes.
Elsewhere, Atletico today had their transfer ban upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Atletico Madrid had hoped to have the ban reduced enabling them to buy players this summer, but CAS have upheld the ban meaning they will not be able to complete the signing of players until January 2018.

And after a rocky 24 hours for the club and Griezmann, the 26-year-old's latest tweet has fuelled speculation he could be set to stay in the capital.
Griezmann tweeted this evening: "Ahora más que nunca #Atleti #Todosjuntos".
That message translates to: "Now more than ever #Atleti #AllTogether".
It suggests Griezmann could be willing to ride out the hard times at Atletico and help them next season by staying with the club he's been with since 2014.
La Liga expert Guillem Balague also suggested Griezmann has now confirmed he’ll be staying with Atletico.

Griezmann said recently he was happy at Atletico and his agents were in talks with club officials.
"I am good at the club. My agents are talking with Atletico and we will see what happens,” Griezmann said.
“My future will be decided this summer. If I do leave this summer, the date will depend on the qualifying phase of the World Cup.
"I am happy here. I have spoken with the manager, with Koke and Godin. It is in the hands of the president of the club. We will see how it goes."
