In 2014 Mr Carswell defected from the Conservatives to Ukip to help drive support for an EU referendum and lead Britain out of the European Union.
As Theresa May prepares to trigger Article 50 on Wednesday, the former Ukip politician has now stepped down to become an independent MP for Clacton.
Speaking to BBC Essex, Tory MP Andrew Bridgen, claimed that the MP would be welcome to re-join the Conservatives.
He said: “I would like to see Douglas, if he wishes to, standing as a Conservative in the next general election, which will probably be 2020.
Douglas Carswell has stepped down to become an independent MP for Clacton
“Douglas has been in the Conservative party for the vast majority of his political career and like many people he will have dabbled with Ukip and now decided and perhaps in the future, the Conservatives delivering Brexit is where he wants to be.”
If Mr Carswell was to re-join the Tories before the next general election then it would likely spark another by-election in which Nigel Farage could possibly run in.
Both Mr Farage and millionaire Ukip donor Aaron Banks have seen their relationship deteriorate with the MP in the last few years.

“But you know, I think the fundamental reason for Ukip, certainly the reason that I made that switch and the reasons why I think millions of people around the country made the switch to Ukip was over the Europe question.
“We can be sure now, we can be absolutely certain that Brexit is in good hands, we are going to leave and all of the things that Vote Leave campaigned for are going to come to pass. It’s wonderful, this is a moment for celebration.”
There are reports that after losing their only MP, Farage plans to write to every household in the Clacton constituency in a bid to spark another by-election.
