Iryna Nohai and her partner have been arrested after a doctor realised she was pregnant
Iryna Nohai, 27, was arrested after attending a doctor’s surgery with cramps.
The doctor then discovered she was pregnant and informed the authorities, who arrested her and her partner Emlyn Culverwell‚ 29.
They were detained on January 29 – just two days after they celebrated their engagement.
Mr Culverwell, originally from South Africa, and Ms Nohai, originally from Ukraine, have lived in UAE for years.
Mr Culverwell’s family say they have received no information from the UAE or South African authorities.
His mother Linda said: “Every time we try to get information, it feels as though I’m hitting a brick wall.
“We don’t even know if they have legal representation.
"I can imagine the hell [Iryna] is going through. It must feel as if she is being raped by the authorities.
The pair were arrested in late-January – just two days after getting engaged
"The only thing they did which was wrong, was to fall in love. It makes no sense.
"We are trying to get messages to the two to say we love them and that they shouldn’t be worried.”
She said she was particularly concerned about Ms Nohai – with her cramps possibly a symptom of a early-term miscarriage.

“What concerns me most is that we actually haven’t got a clue how they are.

“All the Department of International Relations is prepared to say is that we have ‘to be patient’, but there are three lives at stake here."
A spokesman for the department said: “The South African government is aware of the case but unfortunately cannot provide legal assistance. All we can do is monitor the situation and try to ensure that they are fairly treated."
UAE authorities are not believed to have officially charged the pair yet as they are still carrying out tests.
