Sitcom fans might recognise the Count Olaf as How I Met Your Mother’s Barney Stinson, if they can see past the prosthetics and wigs actor Neil Patrick Harris dons to play the villain.
Harris has revealed the incredible length of time that it took to transform him into Olaf and his many disguises.
He told Entertainment Tonight: “It takes about three hours to get all the stuff on, and then all day long you have to make sure it's not coming off.”
Executive producer Barry Sonnenfeld has praised Harris’s performance as “extraordinary”.
“Whether he’s Shirley, Count Olaf, Captain Sham, or Stephano… it’s an amazing performance,” he told Indiewire.
Harris explained how he approached each disguise as a wholly different character.
“The books are super descriptive about how they looked,” he said.
“I tended [to think] more as a director than an actor, to be honest, because I tried to plot them over the course of the season. I didn’t want it to seem like I was replicating voices.”

Neil Patrick Harris stars as Count Olaf and has previously appeared in How I Met Your Mother
Cobie Smulders starred as Robin and now plays Mother in A Series Of Unfortunate Events
Count Olaf was previously played by Jim Carrey in the 2004 Lemony Snicket film, which Sonnenfeld feels was too focused on its lead actor.
He said: "I always felt that one of the mistakes of the film version was that it was too big and too loud and too Jim Carrey-centric.
"I always thought what was great about the books were that they were about the kids. I felt the movie let the kids disappear in the whole Jim Carrey of it all.

"Jim's a really great actor, but I felt that the movie fell in love with that aspect, and as brilliant as Neil is, he's one of many brilliant actors in the show, and the reason the show works is that everyone's good.”
