In partnership with RuneScape
RuneScape is a game that needs no introduction. The beloved MMO has been around for over 15 years, and there aren’t many of us who haven’t played it at some point.
Those of us who aren’t still playing often feel the nagging call to return to the game and see what’s new, so a brand new update allowing access to the mysterious and deadly Golden City of Menaphos could be the perfect time to do just that.
Without further ado, here are ten things we can’t wait to see now that the gates are finally open.
1) Unearth the Secrets of the Shifting Tombs
Before you’re let loose in the city, you’ll need to have finished up the Diamond in the Rough and Stolen Hearts quests – if you want to dive straight into the new Slayer dungeon – while it’s also recommended that you’ve beaten Icthlarin’s Little Helper, and have the Slayer skill up to at least level 88.
Oh, and don’t forget that Agility, Construction, Crafting, Divination, Dungeoneering, Prayer, Runecrafting, and Thieving should also all be at least level 50 if you want to check out the Shifting Tombs.
What are the Shifting Tombs, I hear you cry? They form a city-wide minigame in which you can explore a constantly changing network of procedurally generated tombs to complete set objectives, such as gathering certain resources in a given time limit.
Obviously you’ll be awarded experience and riches if you’re successful, and the shifty nature of the Shifting Tombs – as well as three tiers of increasing difficultly – means no expedition is ever the same.
2) Side With a Faction and Gain Reputation for Awesome Rewards
We’ll all be arriving to Menaphos as outsiders, which gives us the perfect opportunity to build up a reputation and really make a name for ourselves – choose who you want to align yourself with, and bag some sweet loot in the process. It’s all about the sweet, sweet loot.
There are four different factions in the city: Worker, Port, Merchant and Imperial, and each will unlock new adventures andamenities for you to enjoy. More reputation equals more quests equals more of a good time – easy.
Don’t worry about swearing undying allegiance to one and getting locked out of the rest though – Menaphos is an inclusive place and you can switch between factions – though it’s advised you see everything one has to offer before moving on.

3) Start a Cat Collection (yes, really)
Cats are basically the greatest things in the universe (even if they do occasionally poop in bathtubs, but whatever). Great news then, as once you get inside Menaphos, you’ll be able meet and befriend all kinds of cool feline types.
There are no less than 16 cat chums waiting to be collected in Menaphos, from Lucifurr (great name), all the way through to the elusive Postcat (90s British kids should enjoy a certain Postman Pat reference).
4) Explore Dynamic Questing
One of the biggest differences in the expansion is the idea of dynamic questing – where most RuneScape adventures would take place over one big quest, this time the devs are keen to tell the story of Menaphos over a series of smaller, interconnecting quests.
It’s a relatively new approach to telling a longer story for RuneScape, and another example of the kind of variety and innovation you can expect to see from the new expansion.
5) Foil Amascut’s Evil Plot
If you’ve played RuneScape before now, chances are you’ve heard of Amascut – the Goddess of Destruction is the primary villain during the Desert quest series, and she’s back again to cause more trouble.
This time around, the tricky devil has taken control of the Golden City’s leader – the Pharaoh – and is wreaking havoc while searching for her father Tumeken.
Given that Amascut’s actions are pretty much responsible for all the quests we’ll embark on and dungeons we’ll explore in Menaphos, I guess we should thank her? Maybe? Probably not.
6) Take a Magic Carpet Ride Over the Golden City
I’ve always said you haven’t really seen a city until you’ve flown over it on a magic carpet – a life ethos which has proven unrealistic, given that magic carpets don’t actually exist.
Luckily, the very first quest you’ll take on when entering the Golden City allows you to take in the sights from on high. No word yet on whether you’ll be serenaded with a version of A Whole New World, though I desperately hope so.
7) Level Your Slayer All the Way to 120
For the very first time, RuneScape is raising the Slayer skill level cap from 99 to 120, meaning you’ll be able to reach levels of bad-assery that were previously considered impossible.
It’s an exciting prospect, I know – but where’s the best place to go to take advantage of this update? Luckily, the Menaphos expansion is adding a brand new Slayer dungeon for us to explore and conquer.
8) Explore the New Slayer Dungeon
Yep, the Sophanem Slayer Dungeon offers players a chance to dive into a deadly tomb filled with monsters to slay and dangers to face – just make sure your slayer skill is at level 88, and that you’ve beaten the quest Icthlarin’s Little Helper. You’ll also need some Feathers of Ma’at, though these can be obtained in the Shifting Tombs.
Located Sophanem (as the name implies) the new dungeon adds 12 new monsters, half of which are ‘corrupted’, and the other half of which are ‘devourers’, which sounds absolutely lovely. Kind of.
While it might sound like a traditional Slayer dungeon, there are a few twists, including a new kind of loot chest near the dungeon entrance that collects all the loot and drops from monsters you’ve beaten down – if you die in battle, you’ll have to pay to keep the contents of the chest, or lose the lot.
9) Defeat the new Slayer Boss
Two weeks after launch, a new Slayer boss will appear in the dungeon for you to have a crack at. Not much is known about the beast just yet, save for the fact that ‘fantastic rewards’ wait for those that can beat it.
Gaining access to a throwdown with this enigmatic big bad also requires the collection of tradeable keys, which can be picked up from fallen monsters within the dungeon.
Given that it’ll be two weeks before you can face the fiend, you’ve plenty of time to explore the Slayer dungeon and get yourself ready.
10) Most of All: Explore!
There’s so much to see and do in the expansion that the most important thing to remember is this: Take the time to see it all, and really get the most out of it.
Whether you’re beating up terrifying new monsters, exploring dark dungeons, wandering the streets and giving aid to the people of the city, or just kicking back by the docks with a spot of fishing, there’s absolutely loads waiting for you.
So what are you waiting for? The gates are open right now, and we’re not getting any younger – although going by all the fresh new additions to the game – and the promise of more to come – RuneScape itselfis getting younger every day.
